Being Kind to Yourself
If you’ve been reading for a while you know I started working full time in April. At that point I was still in classes and exams: by May I was done school but still had a really tough time adjusting.
I wasn’t at all expecting the adjustment to take as long as it did. I was used to working two, sometimes three jobs while being in school. Yet, working full time was really challenging for the first two months. I was still working part time on weekends so it was a 7 day straight schedule. Even once that ended, I found myself always feeling like I never had any personal time.
I finally am feeling like I have a great hold on my time, and even though I still work some weekends, I make sure to keep at least one weekend day off per week (when I can). Here are some of the tricks I found most useful!
- Schedule your week: Little things like outfits, evening activities, meal planning, etc. Can make a huge difference. Having things prepared ahead of time really helps you stay on time and not run late! I found that if I started off my morning by running late, it offset my entire day.
- Daytime walks: It’s not always a possibility but when you can take a little walk either on your lunch or afternoon break. Getting some sun during the day made me feel like I was still able to enjoy the weather despite being in an office all day. Not to mention it really helps break up the day and routine of office work.
- Balance your evenings: It’s easy to put your entire to-do list on your weekday evenings when you try to keep your weekends free. But this actually means you never have a moment of relaxation in 5 days until the weekends come around. Not to mention, realistically you will always have some chores or shopping to do on the weekend so it’ll never be completely clear! Space things out and give yourself evenings to relax and do absolutely nothing when possible.
- Plan farther ahead: I already mentioned planning your days and week ahead of time, but I found it so useful to take a weekly look at my calendar and the month ahead. This helps me mentally prepare when some weeks are going to be hectic, not to mention remind me what’s coming up for me to be able to arrange the rest of my week around it.
- Don’t snooze: It’s better for me to have to drink two coffees(I try to only drink one per day) then to snooze my alarm once. The snooze effect is real. That extra ten minutes of sleep makes me 100% more sluggish in the morning and makes getting out of bed even worse. Push though and get up with the first alarm! This is also key to being on time!!!
- Give yourself time: It’s a new role, a new schedule and a new life chapter. Whether you’re starting a new semester, joining the workforce, or any other new beginning, give yourself time to adjust and figure out timelines and tips that work for you!!
I’m finding that I have a very tough time being patient with myself lately. I’m extremely tough of myself and do not forgive myself easily. This is completely wrong! We are told to push ourselves but we also need to be kind to ourselves, we are all learning and that requires an adjustment curve.
So take time for yourselves my gems, you’re worth it!
