The Secret Social Life of Reading
Hi gems,
Happy, happy Monday! ✨
Today’s blog is about a topic you know I hold near and dear to my heart, and something that deserves way more hype than it gets: BOOK CLUBS.
I know reading is often seen as a cozy solo activity, curled up with tea, a blanket, and maybe a pet who insists on sitting directly on your book. But reading in sync with a group of like-minded people? That’s a whole different kind of magic. The laughs, the inside jokes, the “wait, you interpreted THAT scene how?” moments… chef’s kiss.
Currently, I’m living my best double-book-club life, and let me tell you, they are the perfect yin and yang.
The first is pure girlhood joy. It’s with friends, there’s wine (a generous amount), amazing books, and just as many hilarious tangents as there are plot discussions. We rotate hosts, potluck style, so every meeting comes with new snacks, new stories, and that lovely feeling of walking into someone’s home where laughter’s already in the air. The group is a mix of old friends, newer faces, and “friends of friends” who quickly become your people. Whether we’re dissecting a literary masterpiece or dramatically roasting a book we all hated, it’s the most wholesome, serotonin-filled way to spend an evening.
The second is my work-organized book club, which might sound corporate and buttoned-up, but it’s honestly adorable. We meet over Zoom once a month, and while the tone is a touch more serious, it’s still warm, fun, and unexpectedly personal. It’s the best way to meet coworkers I would never otherwise cross paths with, and to connect over something non-work-related. There’s something strangely bonding about seeing your finance colleague passionately defend a romance novel or hearing your quietest coworker drop a hot take on a mystery plot twist.
One of my favourite parts of being in both clubs is that I am reading genres and authors I never would have picked up on my own. Science fiction? Historical biographies? Fantasy romances? All on the list this year. And more often than not, I am pleasantly surprised. It’s like discovering a whole buffet of flavours you didn’t know you liked.
So if you’ve ever thought, “A book club sounds fun, but I’m not sure it’s for me” let me be the gentle shove you need. It doesn’t matter if you read every page, skim like a maniac the night before, or just show up for the snacks and gossip. The magic is in the people, the conversations, and that cozy sense of community that only comes from sharing a story together.
Chat soon.. because many books need to be reviewed,
