August book of the month: The Women by Kristin Hannah

Hi Gems,

I am so excited to chat with you today about this book. And I don’t want to be dramatic, but I truly think The Women by Kristin Hannah might have changed my life. Dare I say it? This could be the best book I have ever read. And keep in mind, I read over 200 books a year, so that is saying something.

What makes this even more surprising is that the book is completely outside my usual content, genres, and storylines. On paper, there is no reason I should have loved it. Yet here I am, weeks after finishing, still thinking about it daily. If you haven’t read this book yet, pause whatever you are doing and hit order immediately.

Kristin Hannah has now officially earned her spot as a repeat author on my Kindle. She has such a gift for bringing details to life, and The Women was the most incredible introduction to her writing. Fun fact: one of her other novels, The Nightingale, is being adapted into a movie soon. For my audiobook lovers, you will be thrilled to know I listened to this one on Audible and adored every single second. The voices, the sound effects, the pacing—it felt like I was living inside the story.

The novel follows our main character, Frankie, through a sweeping arc of her life. We meet her in her late teens, watch her make the life-changing decision to enlist in the Vietnam War, travel alongside her during her years deployed as a nurse, and then witness the long and difficult journey as she attempts to return to anything resembling normal life.

The book is on the longer side, but it never once felt like a slog. Every chapter pulls you in with something new. There are unexpected twists, moments of raw heartbreak, family dynamics that make you root for everyone, and quiet, relatable reflections that feel like they have been pulled straight from your own life. Some turns hit like a gut punch, others make you want to hug the book to your chest and just feel.

This is one of those rare stories that is so layered it has something for every reader. Whether you connect with the history, the emotional depth, the resilience of the characters, or simply the beauty of Kristin Hannah’s writing, you will walk away changed. She somehow manages to hold her audience captive for the entirety of the book, which is no small feat.

If you have read it, I want to hear everything—your thoughts, your favourite moments, the scenes that made you cry, the characters you will never forget. Drop a comment below and let’s talk about it.

And of course, follow me on Instagram and TikTok @tiathings for more book recommendations, honest reviews, and the occasional unhinged rant about characters I cannot stop thinking about.

Chat soon,
Tia Things
