My 5 favorite book series
Today I am unleashing my nerd self and going all in
on my 5 favorite book series. There's nothing I love more at the end of
a long day than to cuddle up to a good book and get lost in its imaginary
world. Some romance, some sci-fi, and a lot of daydreaming.
After
The After series is a total of 4 books, plus the
“before” novel which now brings the total to 5. The story is not a conventional love story between
two teens, but so raw with emotion and struggle. The wild differences between
the two main characters give readers a look into a relationship involving two
drastically different people who might not be so different after all. It also
gives us all hope for people to change, although that hope is extremely
realistic. There is no magic life-changing moment, but four books, and many
years of work and effort. I love that this series isn’t always pretty, but it
brings readers in so deeply that you’ll find yourself laughing, crying,
confused and maybe even throwing the book across the room like I did!
Ps. This series is now a movie series as well. The
first movie “After” is already out, and the second is coming soon!
The summer I turned pretty
Now this is a completely romcom type of love where
the love triangle involves two brothers but it’s not so simple either. There is
loss, growth, a few weddings and a lot of confusion. Belly grew up with
Jeremiah and Conrad but when they are older and realize the connections they share;
things get a little bit more intense and a lot more complex. What I like is the
3 book series carries readers through the main part of Belly’s 16-19 year old
life, but incorporates flashbacks and flash forwards as well, allowing us to
fill the blanks where needed and get a deeper understanding of the depth and
connections the characters share. I’m not going to lie I’ve read this series
about a dozen times and still am not fed up; the story is beautiful every
single time.
Divergent
The Divergent series bring together romance, sci-fi
and action all in one by bringing readers into an alternate world. I think the
reason it’s so easy to be transported into this world is the fact that it isn’t
so far from our own. We follow the story of a young women living in the
difficult society and who must live through the hardship of hiding her identity
in order to survive. She then meets people who change everything and show her a
whole new side of herself. One of my favourite aspects of this book series is
the fact that it isn’t only romantic, only sci-fi or action but a fair mix of
all three and the female lead, as much as she has a team behind her, isn’t
depending on anyone to go ahead and save the world.
Sarah Dessen
She is one of my favourite authors and although
this isn’t a series, all her independent books have connections to each other
like the same named town, band, some characters that come up every once in a
while, etc. Most of her stories are centered around teenage female characters
and are often romance books. I love that recently she has three new books that really
are making huge steps by having difficult story lines like the main characters
brother going to jail, a parent being deceased, etc. And that the story isn’t
focused on a love story but rather the romance occurs organically in a story
which is truly centered on characters who are adapting and finding themselves.
The
Darkest Minds
The Darkest Minds are a four-book series
which actually were also made into a movie, but the movie wasn’t successful
enough to warrant a continuation into more movies. The books are similar to
Divergent in the way that they show a society that isn’t too different from our
own, making it easy to get hooked. The story here involves a lot more sci-fi
aspects such as the characters having powers, but I live how the author,
Alexandra Bracken, incorporated the powers into each character’s personality so
it feels really organic and not too far fetched.
That's it for my nerdy self!
Enjoy your book of the day gems!
